The empty grave
Luke 24 1 On the first day of the week, the women went to the tomb early in the morning with the fragrant oils they had prepared. 2 They saw that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb. 3 They went in, but they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, two men in shining garments appeared to them. 5 The women were frightened and looked down at the ground. But the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but he has risen." ...
Thoughts on sculptural design:
At the front of the viewing room, a staircase leads to the burial chamber. Each step is different, the distances between them vary, as do the angles between them; until the point where the earthly life transforms into another life. The stone has been rolled away - the tomb is empty. Framed by the core of the message, the Gospel according to Luke.
With reference to this, Christians can hope that the one laid out has already risen from the death. But it can also be seen as a metaphor for our journey through life with all its different stages, at the end of which light without shadow awaits.
Aluminum, with ash and charcoal as surface - “Remember, man, that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” - Ash Wednesday.
The asymmetrical space, designed by architect Wilfried Menz, allows for a special range of forms in the interior design. The installation attempts to address the subtle emotional state of the relatives of the deceased, offering them comfort in order to transcend their difficult situation to a higher level.
